I absolutely love the seaside. Love love love it! It's probably because I grew up in just about the furthest point in the UK that you can be from the sea, in any direction. Talk about sea deprivation!! So even at 25 years old, I still get ridiculously excited about being the one in the car to shout "I can see the sea and the sea can see meeeee!"
Last summer, as with all summers, I was desperate to sit on the beach and breathe in that glorious sea air. I think most Brits would vote Devon, Cornwall and Dorset as the best counties to visit if you're wanting miles and miles of beautiful beaches. But the South-West is quite a long way to travel for a day trip, so we decided to drive down to Whitstable in Kent, one of our most favourite seaside towns to visit.
Whitstable really is one of England's little treasures. The town itself is very quaint and timelessly British, full of cute independent shops and art galleries. The perfect place to 'mooch around' and have a browse. The harbour is famous for it's oysters (each July they have an annual Oyster Festival!) and the town boasts a range of fine seafood eateries and fish restaurants, such as the renowned Whitstable Oyster Company.
We parked in a local pay & display car-park just off the High Street on Middle Wall, just a short walk from the harbour itself and wandered along the high street. It was such a beautiful day, the sky was bright blue and there was a brilliant summers vibe going on!
We stopped off in a local toy store and bought a kite (how cool are we?!) and wandered down to the beach. The beach itself is a shingle beach but that's fine by me because I'm not a massive fan of sand. Plus I love walking along the beach and scouring at my feet for beautiful stones! The beach is broken up by rows of groins. All my long lost knowledge from Geography A Level came back to me!!
We got a fish and chip lunch from The Fish Market right on the harbour front and sat on the side of the long wooden walkway leading down to the sea. Such a perfect seaside view of boats and the sparkling blue sea!
After lunch it was time for us to fly the kite! We wandered further down to a quieter bit of beach. The wind was perfect and our colourful kite looked beautiful against the bright blue sky. Such a fun thing to do and for only £6 the kite was a bargain!
On our way back to the carpark we wandered along the Sea Wall where you can find independent artists selling their work and little cafes etc. Rob bought a beautiful print which we are still yet to put up at home!
We ended our day with dinner and wine at The Marine Hotel, where we sat outside and watched the most gorgeous sunset across the sea.
So good for the soul.
Thank you Whitstable. We'll see you soon!
